“Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” Coco Chanel

A classic shirt is always in fashion

Any item of clothing that will never go out of fashion is a classic piece of clothing, for women this is often that old faithful little black dress and for men this is often a shirt. A classic shirt is a shirt which will go with anything, a crisp white well tailored shirt is a classic. It can be worn for business meetings during the day with a well fitting suit and a tie and by night it can be worn with jeans and smart shoes.

Of course it doesn’t have to be white, that is only what springs to my own mind, it could be blue, black or even pink! (The right pink though, so no garish colours.) The important thing is that it fits perfectly, that it can be transformed from day wear to night wear and that it is a timeless classic that will never go out of fashion. In the context of a shirt prints will never remain classics as prints are at the mercy of the latest fashions, but which ever shop you go into that crisp white shirt will always be sitting there at any time of year. A true classic for all time!

Is designer jewellery worth the money?

Designer jewellery (and clothes, whilst we’re at it) might look fashionable; but what are we paying for, really? The fancy box the bracelet comes in? The bag it is packaged in? Designer brands were invented specifically for the rich to have a way to flaunt their money in a fashionable way, and for jewellery gangs to have something glamorous to steal. OK, I’ll admit it – even I have had a weak moment where I’ve trawled down New Bond Street at peeked in the window at Tiffany & Co longingly, but then something brings me back down to earth.

I could probably go into Primark and find a replica of the exact bracelet for thousands of pounds cheaper; no, that’s not me being a ‘cheapskate,’ it’s me being rational. The truth is the only designer brands I own say “Anna,” written in red marker pen on the label. And I’d like to keep it that way. (Of course, if I win the lottery tonight, my view might change completely.)

Why spend??

It might be nice to splash out and have your offspring modeling the latest fashions but where do you draw the line?
Much pressure is put onto parents by children who want things just because the item wears a certain logo or because “all my friends have them”.

I remember being in that position myself when my son, who is now 20, was aged about 13.He dragged me into town to buy a pair of trainers that “everyone was wearing”

We entered the large sports shop-”well” I said “what do they look like” as we were faced with a shoe rack holding dozens of different styles-My sons reply?-”I don’t know mum”

It transpired that no-one else actually owned a pair but with a price tag of £70 (a lot of money 7 years ago) and a certain amount of hype following a footballers connection, they were the shoes to own.

We actually left the shop with a pair costing half the price and a happy teen, regardless. They turned out to be one of his favorite pairs of shoes. In this case value won-thankfully!
